I have an Ahmet Corapcioglu campaign sign on my driveway because I support him for Select Board. Friends have asked me how I can square that with being a leader in the League of Women Voters of Harvard and its robust nonpartisan policy. It’s a fair question. When I explained that I recused myself from all LWVH election activities this year so I could support Ahmet, they said, “If you’re willing to do that, I want to hear more about him.” So here’s why I support Ahmet for Select Board.
Since we first met, I’ve found him eager to learn all about Harvard, easily making friends, attending local activities, helping wherever he can, asking questions and listening to varied viewpoints. With over 30 years as an executive in a large national company as well as in small enterprises and building his own business, Ahmet certainly has the experience and ability to navigate complex situations and face difficult financial challenges. He seems to be a natural innovator and problem solver who listens carefully and approaches issues collaboratively. Isn’t this what we need in a Select Board member?
Ahmet is inquisitive and is perhaps better informed on local issues than many other residents. He has studied our town finances and management, our charter, our schools governance and budget, and future Devens decisions. As an academic, he clearly recognizes the importance of maintaining excellence in our schools.
I respect Ahmet’s straightforward style that clearly evolved from his career as a naval officer and his real life experience as a naturalized U.S. citizen. This is a man who truly embodies our code of conduct.
It’s encouraging to have a competitive local election this year. In the past, there was often only one candidate for a position on the ballot who won with few votes, mostly based on name recognition. That may be one of the reasons why we find ourselves in our current situation.
I believe Ahmet can move us beyond business as usual. It’s time for a new perspective to help restore decency and respect to our executive branch.
