Varsity team captains make their case for a new athletic field

September 19, 2025

We are writing to you today to discuss the athletic fields here in Harvard and the profound impact they have had on our experience growing up.

All of the youth sports, from soccer to lacrosse to field hockey, are a huge focal point for the community as kids and parents come together to bond over a game. With parents volunteering to carry sandbags or move goals, the support and connection among everyone participating is unmatched as they are unified by the common goal to create the best experience possible for their kids.

This exceptional community extends beyond the fields, as the friends we made on the field are still our closest friends off the field. We learned to be competitive, collaborative, and compassionate as we teamed up toward a common goal.

Also, we all came to learn how to be passionate about sports in which we take pride. The Harvard youth sports community has enabled this and more, as every time we put on the jersey, even today, we get excited to represent the town beyond our borders as a display of the town’s excellence.

Furthermore, we would like to touch on the injuries due to the conditions of our current fields. We have personally known many people who have experienced ankle and leg injuries, as our field outside of Bromfield and at the track is extremely uneven and patchy. With a new field in Harvard, we could hopefully ensure that the field conditions are safer, and therefore prevent more injuries from happening.

The addition of another athletic field will only further encourage all the already tremendous qualities of the Harvard youth sports programs by lifting possible limitations in field availability for any sports, while also increasing the flexibility of scheduling, so everything becomes more inclusive. A new feature that would come with a new field is the rotation of fields, allowing a few to recover and regrow for a period of time while the other fields are in use.
