When we decided to move from Rhode Island to Massachusetts in 2023, the first criterion in our minds was finding a good schooling district. A chance viewing in Zillow and we suddenly found ourselves enamored by the quaint little town of Devens. The school was good, the community was welcoming, and the people were so friendly. Two years later, we consider moving to Devens one of the best decisions ever made.
Children are the flagbearers of the next generation and schools are the place where they learn, dream, and lay the foundation for a better future. It is our responsibility to ensure that these schools which are at the heart of our community reflect our values, shape our future, and attract families who care deeply about quality education.
If we passed no override, the schools would be $955,112 short of the required budgets for the 2025-26 school year. Schools are actively working to increase revenue through adjusting fees for student parking, buses, and sports. However, not passing the override will have a devastating impact on the schools.
Supporting the override isn’t extravagance—it is about preserving what we already have: dedicated teachers, strong academic and extracurricular activities, and a safe and supportive environment for kids to grow and learn. Our small, but beautiful community—Harvard—deserves to thrive, not just get by. Let’s all ensure it does.
I urge every Harvard voter to stand with our schools and vote yes for Tier 1 and Tier 2 of the override at the ballot on May 6.
