Additional playing fields in Harvard have been a long time coming. Last week’s article did not have specifics about how playing fields would be laid out. The town needs to learn from its experiences with the Charlie Waite and Harvard Park fields. Neither field drains well, taking them out of service when there is a lot of rain, whereas the older Depot Road fields drain well. In addition, the Waite field is simply too small for full field soccer, 11 versus 11 players. Harvard Park has reasonable dimensions, approximately 70 x 110 yards, the target dimensions for a new field. Said dimensions can easily accommodate other grass sports like lacrosse, field hockey, and ultimate frisbee.
