Twelve years ago I moved to Harvard and I remember my excitement when I learned there was a Girl Scout camp miles from my home. Girl Scouts and Girl Scout camp helped shape my childhood; I was looking forward to sharing that experience with my two daughters.
Flash forward to October 2015. I was a newly minted Girl Scout leader for my daughter’s Daisy kindergarten troop attending my first all town “encampment” event along with a group of energetic 5- and 6-year-olds. With a camp map in hand we all stomped along the dirt trails and navigated the 52 acres of woods and waterfront with our sister Girl Scouts from Harvard and learned new things about Indigenous people and their culture, the theme of that year.
Ten years later, my troop of Senior Girl Scouts recently volunteered at a similar all town event, guiding younger troops as their sister Girl Scouts had before; this year with an Alice in Wonderland theme. Through the years Camp Green Eyrie has been the backdrop of many magical moments during the school year and over the summer, giving children of all ages an opportunity to sleep in platform tents, learn knife skills and knots, cook over campfires, sing camp songs, explore Bare Hill Pond, swim out to Blueberry Island, engage in community service, making thousands of memories along the way.
On Saturday, Aug. 23, hundreds of Girl Scouts, their families, and camp staff will congregate in Harvard for a celebration to mark Camp Green Eyrie’s 100 year milestone! Harvard residents and former, current, and future campers and staff are welcome to attend the festivities throughout the day, attend dinner, or stay overnight in tent units.
